Fasting from the Internet

By | September 24, 2005

Philip Ryken asks the question “Where Have All the Good Men Gone?” in his 9/14/05 blog post.

Maybe A. W. Tozer knows the answer: “Nothing that we have discovered about ourselves or God has revealed any short cut to pure spirituality. It is still free, but tremendously costly. . . . I am convinced that the dearth of great saints in these times, even among those who truly believe in Christ, is due at least in part to the unwillingness to give sufficient time to the cultivation of the knowledge of God.”

This is a good word for anyone, but perhaps especially for those of us who are tempted to spend more time on the internet — even visiting spiritually wholesome sites… — than we are in Scripture reading and prayer.

Ryken reminds me that it may be wise to periodically fast from the internet. By giving up something I depend on, it may help me realize how much control the things of this world have gotten over me and how I need to be dependant on God alone for life and sustenance.

How much time do you spend online each day?
