Adoption

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will”— Eph 1:3-5

In Covenant Church (OPC), I noticed a couple who adopted three Indian children. The three little kids look as if they are 5-6 years old. As the little girl clings to mom, it becomes obvious that they are adopted. They children are a different skin tone than their parents; white skin and brown skin. At the same time, the parents love their children deeply and treat them as if they were their own natural born children. The little girl cries when scared of her new surroundings. The mother responds with parental affection. This picture of love is truely amazing.

Adoption is also what God has done to Christians. Adoption is a portrait of God’s love toward us. His true and legitimate son is Jesus. But yet, through Jesus, God made a way for us to be adopted as His very own children. We do not deserve this. We are not his legitimate children. Quite the opposite, God is pure, we are impure. We do not have a right to demand that he care for us take us into His family. He should have cast us away! But, how merciful of God! Because of God’s love and mercy, I can say that I am a son of God. God will never leave me or forsake me.

Praise the Lord.
